Prevalence of actinic keratosis and skin cancer in a population of Dutch outdoor workers

Background Outdoor work is associated with high and chronic exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation which might lead an increased risk of developing skin (pre)malignancies. Prevalence actinic keratosis (AK), basal cell carcinoma (BCC), cutaneous squamous (cSCC) melanoma (cM) in Dutch outdoor workers (OW) has not previously been investigated. Objective This study compares the prevalence premalignant lesions tumours OW matched controls (non-OW). Methods In a population-based cohort study, was investigated group (n = 841) 1:1 by age, sex, colour tendency for sunburn. Results AK found 22.7% 22.9% non-OW, BCC 14% 15.7% cSCC 4.9% 3.4% 1.9% 2% non-OW. There no significant association tumours, exception ≥4 AKs (OR 1.3 [95% CI 1.0–1.78]). Conclusions reveals population. No occurrence found, however, multiple more prevalent OW.
